Meet Our Head Trainer
Koki Okumatsu, Ph.D.
Founder and Head Trainer of reall Gym / Doctor of Sports Medicine
Mr. Okumatsu began his research in exercise science for cancer survivors at the University of Tsukuba after his mother was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. He went on to complete six years of collaborative research with St. Luke’s International Hospital—one of Japan’s leading institutions for breast cancer surgery—and got his Ph.D. in Sports Medicine.
In 2023, he launched reall Gym, continuing his mission to support women’s health through science-based training. He has also been featured in mainstream media such as NHK and Yomiuri Shimbun.
Why I Began Researching Breast Cancer and Exercise
In 2015, my mother was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer and underwent surgery at St. Luke’s International Hospital. I was the one who attended the post-surgery consultation, where Dr. Hideko Yamauchi—now a professor at the University of Hawai‘i Cancer Center—explained the importance of exercise after surgery. That was the first time I learned that exercise could benefit breast cancer survivors.
By coincidence, I was conducting research on exercise and nutrition for individuals with obesity at the University of Tsukuba at the time. When I shared this with Dr. Yamauchi, she listened with great interest. After several follow-up discussions, we eventually began a collaborative research project.

Please note that many first-time visitors mistakenly go to the 5th floor, where the medical clinic is located. For your trial session, please come to the 3rd floor, not the 5th.
